Local dialogue leads to an experimental plan to cope with traffic on a specific high traffic section

An additional service to respond to high public transport demand on Lake Garda and improve the travel experiences of both local people and visitors. This is Navigazione Laghi’s response to a recent request from the mayor of Torri del Benaco to put in place fast services to the upper lake in response to demand from hoteliers, tour operators and local people.

In fact, on peak traffic days, the SR110 service planned for the 2026 summer schedule, starting in Peschiera and stopping in Sirmione and Garda, frequently reaches maximum capacity before it even gets as far as Torri del Benaco. While alternative solutions do exist, Navigazione Laghi decided to act rapidly with an experimental additional fast service on the weekends of 1-2 August and 8-9 August 2026.

The new service will take the form of a catamaran which will depart from Peschiera del Garda immediately after boat SR110, stopping at the main east side of the lake and upper lake stops: Garda, Torri del Benaco, Malcesine, Limone sul Garda and Riva del Garda. The return journey will depart from Riva del Garda at around 5 pm. This initiative will double the service capacity on one especially high-traffic section, reducing the pressure on the regular service and contributing to incentivising the use of public boat services as an alternative to a road network which is especially congested during peak tourist season.

When the service is over the service-use data will be analysed with a view to potentially extending it to the end of August and, in the long run, making it a permanent part of the regular Navigazione Laghi schedule. This experiment is part of a wider plan to listen and talk to local communities fostered by the Minister of Transport’s supervisory body with a view to building increasingly close partnerships with local councils, economic operators and communities. The goal is to develop a system of lake transport capable of responding effectively to evolving demand, guaranteeing increasingly effective and accessible services in line with the needs of local people and visitors to Lake Garda.
