The Lierna hamlets: medieval evocations, white beaches and views

An especially mild climate and its position between Lake Como and the Grigne massif has, for centuries, made Lierna a much visited gem

An exquisite gem on the Lecco branch of Lake Como, not simply a location, but a collection of hamlets brought together by geography and history. This is Lierna, blessed with a special position sheltered by the great Grigne massif which ensures it an especially mild microclimate all year round and making for a quality of life which has been drawing in visitors since Roman times.

The beating heart of the town is undoubtedly its Castello hamlet with its well preserved historic centre. It is a fortified area on a natural promontory jutting out into the lake which also hosted Longobard Queen Theodelinda and Empress Adelaide. Its strategic lake transport function is still visible in its narrow alleyway layout and the vaults and courtyards in its interior. Alongside this historic nucleus, hamlets such as Grumo and Genico are key pieces in this regional jigsaw: the former is known for its quiet rural atmosphere while the latter is higher up and offers exceptionally beautiful views.

Lierna’s history is not simply a matter of its medieval walls. It is also there in the profound spirituality of its Chiesa dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro. This church of great artistic value contains precious sixteenth-century frescoes and the relics of the saint, testifying to a deeply rooted and unbroken religious tradition.

For those coming to Lierna for relaxation and the natural world, the Riva Bianca beach is a must. Famous for its white pebble beach and pristine waters it is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the whole of Lake Como, with views which have a seaside quality but also take in the mountains. The Sentiero del Viandante, a historic footpath which links up lake towns, is a further element in the town’s tourist attractions.
