A solid commitment to protect a remarkable yet fragile territory

The damage caused by the flooding of Lake Como

by Tommaso Marconato
13 November 2025

The crucial role played by Navigazione Laghi during the recent wave of severe weather on Lake Como was also highlighted by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport: “Ferries are vital when the shores are blocked by landslides”

Beautiful, yet fragile. The Lake Como region is particularly vulnerable to damage caused by today’s increasingly frequent extreme weather events. The most recent example of this dates back to the end of September, when heavy rainfall caused the lake level to rise dramatically, flooding large areas of Como and isolating the city centre. But that wasn’t all: landslides and mudslides hit several towns along the lakeshore, forcing the closure of numerous roads — including the Statale Regina and the Provinciale Lariana, both vital for daily commuting.

In this context, the presence of Navigazione Laghi’s vessels becomes even more essential. This point was underlined by Minister Matteo Salvini, who visited Como just days after the storm to inaugurate the new hybrid motorboat Ambrosiana: “It’s not just about tourism. These ferries are also essential for commuters and students when both shores are blocked by landslides. This is an exceptional means of transport, and as a ministry we are proud to have invested in it — because we see it as money that truly benefits the local area,” stressed Salvini.

However, the organisation’s commitment goes beyond ensuring essential connections for students and commuters. Environmental stewardship and the fight against hydrogeological instability are also pursued through the promotion of a more sustainable, modern, and environmentally friendly model of mobility. In this respect, Navigazione Laghi is certainly not standing idly by. The launch of the hybrid motorboat Ambrosiana, capable of significantly reducing harmful emissions, stands as clear proof of a tangible commitment to preserving a landscape of extraordinary beauty. A second hybrid ferry is expected to set sail by the end of the year, as part of a €110 million industrial plan largely focused on creating green, efficient infrastructure that contributes to safeguarding one of the world’s most unique natural environments.
