From Domodossola to Locarno, the train makes its way through mountain landscapes of unrivalled charm
A52-kilometre-long unhurried railway journey exploring extraordinary landscapes made even more attractive by the explosion of autumn colours. The Foliage Train is a not-to-be-missed experience for anyone in the Lake Maggiore area in October or November. Seated comfortably facing a window, this is a fascinating trip through veritable picture postcard scenes of natural yellows, reds and browns, with the woods lit up by autumn melding into rocky gorges, historic towns and high peaks with the first sprinkle of snow on them.
THE RAILWAY
The route is the historic Vigezzina-Centovalli railway which has been connecting up Domodossola with Locarno in Switzerland since 1923. It runs all year round but the Foliage train is a special autumn offer (this year from 11 October to 16 November) with special tourist ticket journeys. It attracts tens of thousands of people every year who are left open mouthed by beauties which may be little known but are no less beautiful for it, to the extent that Lonely Planet has now listed the railway as one of Europe’s top ten most beautiful rail journeys.
Tickets include a return journey leaving from Domodossola or Locarno and entitle ticket holders to stop off at a picturesque intermediate location en route or immerse themselves fully in the area’s beauties. Ticket holders are also entitled to discounts on museums, exhibitions and events, for a truly 360-degree experience.
