Cras Stella del Nord, a centre of excellence to save ‘no-one’s animals’

The recovery center in Calolziocorte takes care of every species, without distinction.
In the first eight months of this year, around 1,300 animals have been admitted

A great many wild animals are brought to Cras Stella del Nord in Calolziocorte (Lecco). Our wild animal rescue centre, an excellence hub open 24 hours a day for emergencies, looks after all the forest’s animals, from the smallest bird to water birds and birds of prey and small mammals such as dormice, squirrels, foxes and ungulates of all types. Ours is a genuinely animal-centric philosophy paying attention to all animals equally, from the smallest feathered friend to the largest deer. Numbers have increased this last year.

In the first eight months of 2025 around 1300 animals came in, as against the just over 1000 in the same period last year. This is clear proof that awareness of ‘no-one’s animals’ is increasing and many ordinary people are bringing in wild animals in difficulty. They come in injured, sick or orphaned. If they’re young birds we wean them, if they’re young mammals they’re bottle-fed. When they’ve grown we put them into large enclosures or aviaries so that they can gradually adapt to adult life. We’ve also set up a large protected woodland area for ungulates, such as fawns, young roe deer and muflons. If they’re sick or have been injured – frequently in road accidents or shot by hunters – they get medical attention from our excellent veterinary team. And it’s only when they’re ready that the magical moment comes, the culmination of our work: release back into the wild.
