With around 5,000 inhabitants, it still retains the lively, welcoming atmosphere of an authentic lakeside village. The town lies at the delta of the Cannobina river, which flows down from the narrow valley of the same name and empties directly into the lake, giving Cannobio a mild and pleasantly breezy climate for much of the year. In the heart of the town is the lakeside promenade, considered one of the most picturesque along the entire Lake Maggiore basin. Colourful houses, cafes, restaurants, and arcades line this scenic walkway, where the daily life of the community unfolds. It is also where the famous Sunday market takes place, a lively, year-round event and a form favourite with visitors. The careful preservation of the original facades and architectural details keeps the village’s charm intact, setting it apart from other, more modern towns in the area.

Architectural and natural treasures
In summer, Cannobio is a vibrant hub full of music, tourists, and pedal boats on the Lido, the town beach having been repeatedly awarded the Blue Flag for the quality of its waters. But it’s a great place for a weekend away in spring, too, when it shows its more intimate side, and all the authenticity of a historic fishing village. The old town preserves its medieval layout, with narrow lanes surrounded by tall buildings, and historic townhouses such as Palazzo Omacini, Palazzo Pironi and 18th-century Palazzo della Ragione. The nearby Collegiata di San Vittore houses the relic central to the famous Miracle of the Pietà. The area around Cannobio also offers stunning natural treasures: from the striking ruins of the Castelli di Cannero to trails that climb the Valle Cannobina, reaching the Orrido di Sant’Anna, where icy waters carve gorges and natural pools out of a spectacular landscape. Small hamlets, such as Sant’Agata and the medieval Carmine Superiore, lie higher up and are accessible via hiking trails. The latter houses the beautiful 14th-century Church of San Gottardo, directly overlooking the lake. Its nature, history and art means Cannobio has a great deal to offer and is never at risk of losing its identity. It is, in fact, precisely this combination that makes it one of Lake Maggiore’s most interesting destinations.

Sant’Anna Gorge, a short distance from Cannobio

The town has preserved its original building facades

The Cannobio lakeside promenade: one of the most beautiful walks on Lake Maggiore

This Piedmontese town is the first Italian town you come across when you follow the lakeside from Switzerland Just a few kilometres from the Swiss border, Cannobio is the first Italian town you reach when you travel along the Lake Maggiore shoreline.
