The Piemonte steamship, symbol of Lake Maggiore and Italy’s oldest still operational steamship, is back in service after important restoration work. Built in 1904 in Zurich, the ship was also worked on in the noughties, conserving its Art Nouveau charm and its steam propulsion, wood interiors and refreshment area, symbols of heritage and innovation. In 2023 the ship underwent in-depth refitting in Arona which cost 3.9 million euros. The work put in new digitally controlled boilers, performed structural tests and replaced parts subject to wear and tear, rebuilt the bridges and part of the interiors, fully renovated the kitchen and upgraded the wheelhouse with an electro-hydraulic system. Its on-board systems, wiring and safety systems were also overhauled, as was the funnel whose original shape was conserved. The Piemonte is thus once again the jewel in Navigazione Laghi’s crown, ready to offer travellers an authentic experience and promote Lake Maggiore.
